In this talk, I will present recent work showing how human FAP populations are functionally heterogeneous and highly responsive to the local muscle microenvironment. I will highlight evidence that specific FAP subsets promote fibrosis, fatty infiltration, and impaired regeneration in aging and metabolic disease, while others support productive tissue repair through interactions with muscle and immune cells. I will also discuss our recent findings on how FAPmacrophage communication contributes to muscle regeneration in elderly humans and how niche remodeling may shape repair outcomes. Together, these studies position FAPs not as passive bystanders, but as active directors of skeletal muscle remodeling, with important implications for understanding muscle loss and developing targeted therapies.

Bio:
Jean Farup is Associate Professor of Cellular Physiology at the Department of Biomedicine & Steno Diabetes Center Aarhus, where he leads a research group focused on skeletal muscle biology, regeneration, aging, and metabolic disease. His work centers on how the muscle microenvironment regulates tissue maintenance and repair, with particular emphasis on fibro-adipogenic progenitors and muscle stem cells. Farup has contributed important insights into muscle degeneration and impaired regeneration in aging and type 2 diabetes, using human muscle biopsies, primary cell isolation, flow cytometry, and spatial and single-cell omics.

<eventStart>Wed, 06 May 2026 12:00:00 +0200</eventStart><eventEnd>Wed, 06 May 2026 13:00:00 +0200</eventEnd><eventPlace>Bldg. 1231-424 Lille Ana Aud</eventPlace><eventOrganizer></eventOrganizer><redia-rss-arrangement:location>Bldg. 1231-424 Lille Ana Aud</redia-rss-arrangement:location><redia-rss-arrangement:starttime>1778061600</redia-rss-arrangement:starttime><redia-rss-arrangement:endtime>1778065200</redia-rss-arrangement:endtime><redia-rss-arrangement:display-starttime>1778061600</redia-rss-arrangement:display-starttime><redia-rss-arrangement:display-endtime>1778065200</redia-rss-arrangement:display-endtime>

PhD defence: Mads Christian Lamm Larsen

New research from Aarhus University sheds light on why patients with lupus develop blood clots

<eventStart>Wed, 13 May 2026 13:00:00 +0200</eventStart><eventEnd>Wed, 13 May 2026 15:00:00 +0200</eventEnd><eventPlace>Bartholin Auditorium, Building 1241-135, Aarhus University and online</eventPlace><eventOrganizer></eventOrganizer><redia-rss-arrangement:location>Bartholin Auditorium, Building 1241-135, Aarhus University and online</redia-rss-arrangement:location><redia-rss-arrangement:starttime>1778670000</redia-rss-arrangement:starttime><redia-rss-arrangement:endtime>1778677200</redia-rss-arrangement:endtime><redia-rss-arrangement:display-starttime>1778670000</redia-rss-arrangement:display-starttime><redia-rss-arrangement:display-endtime>1778677200</redia-rss-arrangement:display-endtime>

PhD defence: Mie Wolff Kristensen

Identification of immune-related biomarkers in the blood of patients with kidney cancer

<eventStart>Fri, 22 May 2026 14:00:00 +0200</eventStart><eventEnd>Fri, 22 May 2026 16:00:00 +0200</eventEnd><eventPlace>Bartholin Auditorium, Aarhus University</eventPlace><eventOrganizer></eventOrganizer><redia-rss-arrangement:location>Bartholin Auditorium, Aarhus University</redia-rss-arrangement:location><redia-rss-arrangement:starttime>1779451200</redia-rss-arrangement:starttime><redia-rss-arrangement:endtime>1779458400</redia-rss-arrangement:endtime><redia-rss-arrangement:display-starttime>1779451200</redia-rss-arrangement:display-starttime><redia-rss-arrangement:display-endtime>1779458400</redia-rss-arrangement:display-endtime>

Aarhus Immunology Day

Aarhus Immunology Day -
